Another Option After High School: TradeVocational Schools and Career Colleges. by Randall S. Hansen, Ph. D. Why college? Unless you are one of the lucky few who receive a full scholarship to college, is a college education — and tens of thousands of dollars in debt for you or your family — always the right path after high school? As a former college professor, my first response is yes, of course a college education is worth the investment. More and more jobs and careers are professional, white collar jobs in which an undergraduate degree is the minimum educational requirement. Taking a broader perspective, however, provides a different answer. Depending on your situation — your aptitude, career interests, high-school record, and life goals — learning a trade by attending a career college or vocational school might make much more sense for you. Besides, if you later decide a college degree is appropriate, you can find many alternatives for obtaining it. What does it mean to be working in a trade? It simply means that you have acquired a set of specific skills and knowledge related to a particular jobcareer field. A growing number of jobs and careers in healthcare, technology, mechanics, HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning), agriculture, animal husbandry, construction, and other trades are available to job-seekers with a certificate, vocational diploma, or associate’s degree from career and vocational schools. Even more appealing for people considering a career in skilled trades — many of these jobs are in high demand, with expected growth to continue for some time. Furthermore, because more young people have been choosing college over trades, the shortage of skilled workers is growing.

Besides the demand for these jobs, skilled tradespeople can easily earn $40,000 or more annually. What’s the reason more high-school graduates choose college over trade school? Studies and anecdotal evidence show a combination of factors, including the perceived value and status of a college education, myths and misconceptions about the types of trades jobs, and stereotypes of trades workers. Difference Between Vocational Schools and Four-Year Colleges. While the distinction is slowly blurring, vocational schools traditionally have aimed at providing a narrow course of study focused on providing the training and skills students require for a specific job. Four-year universities and colleges, on the other hand, have traditionally focused more on providing a broad education covering a wide range of topics, centered more on teaching theory and developing critical-thinking skills. Getting Started on a Vocational Career and Education. There are thousands of career and vocational schools throughout the country — as well as numerous online offerings — but the first place to start is with researching trade careers that interest you. Begin the process by talking to your high-school guidance andor career counselor. Ask about books and other resources for trade career and trade schools. See if your school offers a job - shadowing program in which you can spend a day (or part of a day) with someone in a career field that matches your interests. (For more information, see our Job Shadowing Tips Checklist.

)If your high school does not have the resources or tools you seek, take the initiative and conduct your own research on trade careers. Then seek out your family, friends, and neighbors to discover the names of people within your network that are — or know of people who are — in the trades that interest you. Your final step is asking these people if you can shadow them andor conduct an informational interview with them. In an informational interview, you can ask questions such as how the person got started in hisher career, what job opportunities are available in the field, what educationtraining is required to get started in the career, and the like. Learn more here in our Informational Interviewing Tutorial. Once you have narrowed your choice of a trade career, your last step is finding an accredited career or vocational school nearby (or online) that offers the diploma, certification, or degree you need. Again, plenty of books and online resources are available that can help you in your search. Each vocational school has its own admissions criteria, but expect to complete an application, submit your high-school transcript (or copy of your GED). You may also be required to take a placement exam andor submit SAT or ACT test scores if you are considering a four-year program. Before applying to a school, you should especially research the placement record of its graduates for the program you are considering. Most post-secondary schools offer some degree of career counseling others are more pro-active, sponsoring career fairs and other opportunities in which students can connect directly with prospective employers about both apprenticeships and jobs. Finally, while vocational schools are a much cheaper alternative than four-year colleges, you’ll still have tuition, fees, and books.

Many schools offer financial-aid assistance, and you should not by shy or coy in asking each school about what you can expect in terms of grants, scholarships, and loans. by Randall S. Hansen, Ph. D. As a former college professor, I see the drive for most students to complete a college education. I’m not sure how many would be in college if not for the pressure and expectations from family members, and while that is good for some students, others obviously might be better off pursuing options other than college. The reality is that college is not for everyone — nor is it truly needed for everyone — and forcing teens to attend college only to have them flunk out is doing a disservice to them. A generation or two ago high-school graduates rarely went on to college, yet somehow through the years, college has almost become a rite of passage for teens to pass into adulthood and a good career. But teens do not need to attend college to become adults and they certainly do not need to attend to land a good career. Education is critical college is not. There are numerous careers — in healthcare, technology, operations, transportation, and the building trades — that do not require a four-year degree. And as you advance in these careers, there is also nothing stopping you from pursing a college degree at a later age — when it better suits you some people are just not ready for college until a little later in life. So, if you are not college-bound after high school, what are some of your alternatives? Apprenticeships, at one time, were the only way for young people to get a foot in the door to their careers.

If you have an interest in a particular trade, such as technology or construction, seek out jobs in the trade that will not only give you valuable experience but guide you toward advancement by helping you with the certifications or licenses you need to succeed. For example, one high-school graduate worked for a pool construction company for several years, learning every aspect of the business before earning her swimming pool contractors license and starting her own business. Another tool to learning a trade is to obtain your certification in that field. Learn more in this section of Quintessential Careers: Hot Fields in Which Certification May Boost Your Career. And find job leads here. Nothing helps more with that transition to adulthood than holding down a full-time job. Your goal should be to move away from the companies that typically hire teens for part-time work to employers that can provide a future. Often larger employers have more opportunities, so start your search there. Also identify employers whose product or service interests you and whose culture you respect. For example, the person who started working for AT&T in the mailroom because he knew it would be a foot in the door, and now, years later, still with just a high school education, is a highly valued member of the company’s corporate technology staff. Use our Job-Search 101 Tutorial for tools and strategies in finding a job. While you are trying to find your place in the world, why not spend those first few years after high school making a difference?

While you may be familiar with the Peace Corps, they actually prefer college graduates, so you might instead consider looking locally to make a difference or consider such national programs as Americorps, which offers 17-24 year-olds the chance to make a difference through a national network of hundreds of programs throughout the U. S., as well as the Student Conservation Association, which has conservation programs (jobs and internships) throughout the U. S. for adults 18 or older. If all you can think about is getting out of your town and exploring some other part of the world, then traveling may be for you. Traveling to one or more foreign countries is a great way to experience other cultures, learn more about yourself, and equip yourself with cultural knowledge to apply in the global economy. If you have some money, you can find innovative and cheap ways to explore the world. If you don’t have the money, look into student exchange programs, employment on cruise ships, or becoming an au pair or nanny for a family in another country. Go to Cool, Unusual, and Seasonal Jobs. Attend Community College or Vocational School. A great way to ease into college and explore more about who you are and what you want to do in life is taking one or more classes at your local community (or technical) college. Classes are cheaper and admission much easier — and many students work at least part-time to pay their way. You can either take a few classes, follow a dipolma or certification track, or advance toward your associate’s degree. Many community colleges have agreements with four-year colleges, so that if you decide college IS right for you, you can then transfer those credits. Read about one high school grad’s plan in Johnny Goes to College: Part I — Choosing a College. For learning more about vocational school opportunities, read Another Option After High School: TradeVocational Schools. While not always a popular — or safe choice — joining the military is often a great way to learn more about yourself.

Vocational & Trade Schools: A Growing Trend. Advantages to Learning a Trade. With high school graduation fast approaching, you are likely considering what the next step along your educational journey should be. Should you enroll in a 2 year community college or head straight to a 4 year college or university? One option you may want to consider is enrolling in a vocational or trade school. Vocational and trade school educations are popular vehicles for students who want to fast-track into well paying highly skilled careers. Vocational training is also perfect for adult students looking to advance in their current career or even change careers altogether. Trade schools have a long history in the United States of giving students the training to succeed in an ever changing workplace. If you are considering a vocational school you should know just what they offer, and whether or not they are right for you.

Vocational School: Practical vs. Academic. Vocational schools, often referred to as trade schools, are post-secondary educational institutions that provide training and instruction in highly skilled jobs and professions. Vocational schools teach job specific skills designed to enable a student's advancement in any of a number of high skill, high paying professions. Vocational and trade schools place an emphasis on the practical, as opposed to the academic, education. Course studies at a vocational school are specific to certain trades, running the gamut from auto repair to hair dressing construction to IT. Many vocational schools now offer degree-transfer programs, allowing a student to transfer some of their credits to a four year college or university. These degree-transfer programs allow students to leverage a vocational education as useful stepping-stone to a baccalaureate degree. How to Choose a Vocational Trade School. There are more than 300 Vocational Schools in the United States, and choosing the right one for you will rely on a number of important factors: Placement Rate : How many graduates are actually placed in their career field? A high percentage will tell you that the school works hard to prepare its graduates for the work force, but you should investigate their success rate. Student Completion RateGraduation Rate : How many students successfully complete their course of studies. This is often called the "retention rate" and is an indicator of institutional commitment to student education. Facilities : Are the facilities up-to-date? Vocational and trade schools often have some of the latest technology and equipment.

Avoid those with outdated labs, and training equipment. Remember, when you enter the work force you'll often be required to jump right in and work on state-of-the-art equipment and the vocational school you choose should be able to prepare you for the modern workplace. Services : Does the school offer any extra services? Is there a career guidance office? Will they assist you in finding employment once you've graduated? Can they help you find internshipsco-ops while you're a student? TuitionFees : How much will it cost to attend the program? Are there any hidden fees? Is financial assistance available to you? Remember, students who choose a vocational track may also qualify for Federal and private student loans to help them finance their trade school education.

Vocational Trade School Degrees. If you're considering a vocational school you'll find a range of degrees from which to choose. Most vocational schools award associate degrees, diplomas and or certificates. Many highly skilled trades will require certification before you can take up work in your field, licensed electrician, plumber or builder for instance. Vocational schools will prepare you to take the required tests necessary to obtain those certifications that will allow you to begin working at your new career. Vocational Education Career Options: Use the Career Office. Vocational and trade schools offer a wide variety of programs from which to choose. The career center on campus will be able to assist you in determining which program suits your needs and your ambitions. Several career tests are available, and your careerguidance counselor will use them to guide you to various fields that match your skills. Although programs may differ at each vocational school, the programs listed below are some of the most common and most successful: Computer-aided Drafting (CAD) and Design: learn to prepare technical and digital drawings and plans for builders and contractors. Criminal Justice : training for careers in law enforcement and corrections. Culinary : food preparation for hotels, restaurants and business. HVAC : installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

Information Technology : web design, network security and computer programming. Trade Education Options. The skilled trades are lucrative, steadily growing industries. Options have proven to be superior and prudent investment tools offering you, the investor, flexibility, diversification and control in protecting your portfolio or in generating additional investment income. We hope you'll find this to be a helpful guide for learning how to trade options.

Understanding Options. Options are financial instruments that can be used effectively under almost every market condition and for almost every investment goal. Among a few of the many ways, options can help you: Protect your investments against a decline in market prices Increase your income on current or new investments Buy an equity at a lower price Benefit from an equity price’s rise or fall without owning the equity or selling it outright. Benefits of Trading Options: Orderly, Efficient and Liquid Markets. Standardized option contracts allow for orderly, efficient and liquid option markets. Options are an extremely versatile investment tool. Because of their unique riskreward structure, options can be used in many combinations with other option contracts andor other financial instruments to seek profits or protection. An equity option allows investors to fix the price for a specific period of time at which an investor can purchase or sell 100 shares of an equity for a premium (price), which is only a percentage of what one would pay to own the equity outright. This allows option investors to leverage their investment power while increasing their potential reward from an equity’s price movements. Limited Risk for Buyer. Unlike other investments where the risks may have no boundaries, options trading offers a defined risk to buyers. An option buyer absolutely cannot lose more than the price of the option, the premium. Because the right to buy or sell the underlying security at a specific price expires on a given date, the option will expire worthless if the conditions for profitable exercise or sale of the option contract are not met by the expiration date.

An uncovered option seller (sometimes referred to as the uncovered writer of an option), on the other hand, may face unlimited risk. This options trading guide provides an overview of characteristics of equity options and how these investments work in the following segments: Enter a company name or symbol below to view its options chain sheet: Edit Favorites. Options Basics: What Are Options? Options are a type of derivative security. They are a derivative because the price of an option is intrinsically linked to the price of something else. Specifically, options are contracts that grant the right, but not the obligation to buy or sell an underlying asset at a set price on or before a certain date. The right to buy is called a call option and the right to sell is a put option. People somewhat familiar with derivatives may not see an obvious difference between this definition and what a future or forward contract does. The answer is that futures or forwards confer both the right and obligation to buy or sell at some point in the future. For example, somebody short a futures contract for cattle is obliged to deliver physical cows to a buyer unless they close out their positions before expiration. An options contract does not carry the same obligation, which is precisely why it is called an “option.” Call and Put Options.

A call option might be thought of as a deposit for a future purpose. For example, a land developer may want the right to purchase a vacant lot in the future, but will only want to exercise that right if certain zoning laws are put into place. The developer can buy a call option from the landowner to buy the lot at say $250,000 at any point in the next 3 years. Of course, the landowner will not grant such an option for free, the developer needs to contribute a down payment to lock in that right. With respect to options, this cost is known as the premium, and is the price of the options contract. In this example, the premium might be $6,000 that the developer pays the landowner. Two years have passed, and now the zoning has been approved the developer exercises his option and buys the land for $250,000 – even though the market value of that plot has doubled. In an alternative scenario, the zoning approval doesn’t come through until year 4, one year past the expiration of this option. Now the developer must pay market price. In either case, the landowner keeps the $6,000. A put option, on the other hand, might be thought of as an insurance policy. Our land developer owns a large portfolio of blue chip stocks and is worried that there might be a recession within the next two years. He wants to be sure that if a bear market hits, his portfolio won’t lose more than 10% of its value.

If the S&P 500 is currently trading at 2500, he can purchase a put option giving him the right to sell the index at 2250 at any point in the next two years. If in six months time the market crashes by 20%, 500 points in his portfolio, he has made 250 points by being able to sell the index at 2250 when it is trading at 2000 – a combined loss of just 10%. In fact, even if the market drops to zero, he will still only lose 10% given his put option. Again, purchasing the option will carry a cost (its premium) and if the market doesn’t drop during that period the premium is lost. These examples demonstrate a couple of very important points. First, when you buy an option, you have a right but not an obligation to do something with it. You can always let the expiration date go by, at which point the option becomes worthless. If this happens, however, you lose 100% of your investment, which is the money you used to pay for the option premium. Second, an option is merely a contract that deals with an underlying asset. For this reason, options are derivatives. In this tutorial, the underlying asset will typically be a stock or stock index, but options are actively traded on all sorts of financial securities such as bonds, foreign currencies, commodities, and even other derivatives. Buying and Selling Calls and Puts: Four Cardinal Coordinates.

Owning a call option gives you a long position in the market, and therefore the seller of a call option is a short position. Owning a put option gives you a short position in the market, and selling a put is a long position. Keeping these four straight is crucial as they relate to the four things you can do with options: buy calls sell calls buy puts and sell puts. People who buy options are called holders and those who sell options are called writers of options. Here is the important distinction between buyers and sellers: Call holders and put holders (buyers) are not obligated to buy or sell. They have the choice to exercise their rights if they choose. This limits the risk of buyers of options, so that the most they can ever lose is the premium of their options. Call writers and put writers (sellers), however, are obligated to buy or sell. This means that a seller may be required to make good on a promise to buy or sell. It also implies that option sellers have unlimited risk , meaning that they can lose much more than the price of the options premium.

Don't worry if this seems confusing – it is. For this reason we are going to look at options primarily from the point of view of the buyer. At this point, it is sufficient to understand that there are two sides of an options contract. To understand options, you'll also have to first know the terminology associated with the options market. The price at which an underlying stock can be purchased or sold is called the strike price. This is the price a stock price must go above (for calls) or go below (for puts) before a position can be exercised for a profit. All of this must occur before the expiration date. In our example above, the strike price for the S&P 500 put option was 2250. The expiration date, or expiry of an option is the exact date that the contract terminates. An option that is traded on a national options exchange such as the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) is known as a listed option. These have fixed strike prices and expiration dates.

Each listed option represents 100 shares of company stock (known as a contract). For call options, the option is said to be in-the-money if the share price is above the strike price. A put option is in-the-money when the share price is below the strike price. The amount by which an option is in-the-money is referred to as intrinsic value. An option is out-of-the-money if the price of the underlying remains below the strike price (for a call), or above the strike price (for a put). An option is at-the-money when the price of the underlying is on or very close to the strike price. As mentioned above, the total cost (the price) of an option is called the premium. This price is determined by factors including the stock price, strike price, time remaining until expiration (time value) and volatility. Because of all these factors, determining the premium of an option is complicated and largely beyond the scope of this tutorial, although we will discuss it briefly. Although employee stock options aren't available for just anyone to trade, this type of option could, in a way, be classified as a type of call option. Many companies use stock options as a way to attract and to keep talented employees, especially management. They are similar to regular stock options in that the holder has the right but not the obligation to purchase company stock.

The contract, however, exists only between the holder and the company and cannot typically be exchanged with anybody else, whereas a normal option is a contract between two parties that are completely unrelated to the company and can be traded freely. What Is a Vocational School? And What Does It Offer? A vocational school is any educational institution that is specifically geared toward helping students get employment-ready skills and knowledge for particular occupations. Vocational schools are also known by other terms. For example, a technical or vocational school is generally the same thing as a trade school or career college the terms are usually interchangeable. So a vocational program is any course of study or practical training offered by a trade school, technical institute, or vocational college that is designed to lead directly to career opportunities in a particular field. Traditionally, vocational programs focused on areas like construction, manufacturing, automotive service, or cosmetology, but today's vocational schools offer a much wider range of training options, as you can see from the extensive list of programs above. At a trade school, you learn a combination of hands-on skills and theoretical knowledge directly related to the occupation you want to have. Depending on your intended vocation, you'll learn a range of very specific techniques using industry-relevant equipment in facilities that simulate real-world work settings.

You'll also learn about any legal regulations or requirements that apply to your field. You may even get to practice your skills in an actual work setting as part of an included internship or externship. Another defining characteristic of many vocational colleges and trade schools is the attention paid to the reality of students' everyday lives and diverse backgrounds. For example, unlike a lot of traditional academic institutions, career-driven schools tend to incorporate features like: Courses offered in the evening, on weekends, or even online Campuses that are more accessible and closer to where students live or work Easier admission processes Smaller class sizes Shorter, more streamlined programs Personalized, hands-on instruction in well-equipped training facilities that simulate real-world work settings Externships with actual employers Job search assistance. Simply put, vocational schools can often be defined by how they approach training busy adults who want to enter fast-growing industries in the quickest and most pragmatic way possible. And there are clear advantages to a vocational education. Research has shown that post-secondary students who earn degrees in vocational fields of study are more likely to be employed full-time six years after beginning their education. In fact, one study showed that 85 percent of former students who earned a technical or career-based associate's degree had full-time jobs compared to only 73.3 percent of those who earned a more general academic one. And the percentage was also higher for students who attained a career-focused bachelor's degree (88.3 percent vs. 82.6 percent). 1. As you can see, there are definite benefits to receiving vocational training: You can choose from more vocations than you might expect. You may have better employment outcomes. And you'll learn in a way that targets your real-world needs.

(Check out this article about the value of vocational education to discover even more advantages.) So if you are already thinking, "I'm ready to find colleges near me," then you're ahead of the game. You just need to find the right program from among many possible colleges, universities, and trade schools. Programs that fit your aspirations might be offered at a school near you.
